Cultural Analysis

The first step toward making positive changes within your organization is to first take stock of where you are. It is important to be aware of the present values, beliefs, and common behaviours within the organization. By doing so, organizations can better understand how far they need to go, and the specific areas that need most attention.

Why a cultural analysis is important

A cultural analysis gives employees opportunity to describe their perspectives and experiences through audits and assessments and it provides opportunity for self-learning. The overall experience is engaging and interactive, and is within a space that makes employees feel respected and heard. As with other aspects of Social Fabric Institute Inc.’s work, we prioritize meeting people where they are when conducting assessments.

Areas of focus in a cultural analysis can include:

  • Intercultural competence

  • Conflict styles

  • Company culture (as it relates to diversity, equity, and inclusion)

Analysis also includes providing feedback on an organization’s current diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, leadership policies and practices, and opportunities for advancement.

What a cultural analysis entails

Conducting a cultural analysis within an organization does not have to be a large undertaking - and while it can be a stand-alone offering, it is often the first step in a longer-term process of cultural change.

The assessment tools we regularly use include:

  • A thorough audit that evaluates the current state of diversity, equity, and inclusion in an organizations in order to shine a light on areas that need attention

  • Intercultural Development Inventory®

  • Intercultural Conflict Style Inventory®

When working with an organization, Social Fabric Institute has employees and/or leadership fill out the appropriate questionnaires to assess their values, beliefs, behaviours, and/or experiences. The results of these assessments can be shared directly with the employee for their individual benefit or presented to the organization’s leadership as cumulative, anonymized results.
